SHS Cross country meet
Jackson Beaulieu
9/8/21

On September 2nd, Statesboros cross country team had their 2nd race. We had to travel to hell itself or as you may know it Richmond Hill. Thankfully it wasn’t at the school itself but at a Fish Farm. The course was a bit iffy, granted its Richmond Hill so what would you expect right? Anyway, rocks lined the entirety of the trail which would conveniently prove to be hazardous to those running the trail. The half mile trail circled a system of small pools filled with fish. No trees around so the entirety of the race was visible to spectators. The absence of trees and therefore shade didn't prove to be troublesome because it wasn't too hot and there was a nice breeze throughout the entirety of the event.

The event was a relay race of five people that would run half a mile for two hours. My team consisted of some of the best runners. In order, it was Jolee, Flavio, Me (Jackson), Caroline, and Van. The race was not too crazy, it was simply tiring. Running as fast as one can then stopping for a good while then starting up again for two hours just made one's body tired. We ran well and we ran hard, really pushed it and ended up tying for second with another one of our own teams. Richmond Hill got first place, they probably used roids and they had sixty people in their own race so I count it as a dub for our team. I feel like I'm ending this article a bit trite but honestly there wasn't much to the whole ordeal. We went to Richmond Hill, competed, and did well. Really kicked some ass if you ask me.

Sports and the Future: What Where Why

Sports have started this school year! Tryouts have come and gone, and now there have been games and practices for the fall sports. Students have been staying after school to work with their teammates.

Some students may choose to do sports for the college scholarships, others because they enjoy sports or their parents or peers want them too. Whatever the reason, being on a team has many benefits, besides the scholarships and fun.

For one thing, being on a team helps to build responsibility. Students have to keep their grades up to be on the team. They have to find time and dedication to work on schoolwork as well as practice to improve their performance in sports. If they have other extracurricular activities, then they have to work hard and manage their time so that they can continue playing on teams and keep their grades up.

Second, in terms of the future, being on a team is good for college applications. Colleges look for students who demonstrate high-achieving academic and life-in-general performance. By being on a team, you show you know how to work with others.

Having a sports team can help you make friends. Many people become good friends with those they work with on the team. It helps form a friend circle that can help with your social health.

And along with all the social and futuristic benefits of being on a sports team, there are physical benefits as well. Doing sports improves many aspects of physical health, including stronger internal organs, healthier mindset, and improved coordination. Most sports help people get in exercise they need to feel good and healthy.

Being on a team builds important soft skills that are definitely helpful - if not necessary - to succeed in college and careers. Cultivating those qualities while young will help your chances in the future. .

Blue Devil Football

The Statesboro Blue Devils went head to head with the Wayne County Jackets on Saturday, August 21 at 9pm at Erk Russell stadium. I personally believe that such a time was chosen because it was past the teachers' bedtime and they wanted to get a little wild, whilst most of the students on the other hand wanted to sleep. My experience watching the game was different from most in that I barely watched it at all. Don't get me wrong I have plenty of school spirit and all but my attention was set elsewhere. I did see the important stuff though, like the touchdowns and fumbles; because one minute I’d be talking to someone and the next everyone would be in an uproar so I was forced to observe what was taking place. For a season opener the game was more than memorable. My personal favorite part of the game was probably the performance by the band during halftime. They really killed it out there. In the end the Blue Devils won 21 to 7.
