GAZING TENT

Year 3 NP SDE Sem 2 Primer

Design Brief

For DS4: Primer Project, Fleeting Aura: Transient Temptation temporary architecture acts as an outreach portable portal of social yet safe architecture to be located at your respective DS3 Conservation Area: Kampong Glam/Little India/Jalan Besar and may be transported to other selected locations. The design for the architecture portrays as an important opportunity to offer its community a new platform of exploration and social awareness as well as enjoyment for communal social activities.

‘Fleeting Aura’

Primer continues its explorations into bite-size i.e. small-scale architecture of civic delight and public enchantment by re-examining the fleeting aura of possible spaces and events with imaginations. Your design should identify and adopt the anticipation of pandemic crisis to our built environment. A good scheme should embrace rather than form obstacles against social distancing, utilizing the context and natural surroundings of Conservation Area activating as a sustainable temptation.

Your intervention should address the unused spaces found within the Kampong Glam/Little India/Jalan Besar precinct. [Your design should also be able to be transported to various Spots such as HDB or Shopping Mall or Both to coincide with HDB Cool Ideas Enterprise or URA-REDAS’s SPARK Challenge]. Your design must incorporate and be accountable to the following three (3) interpretational functions4 that will enhance the spatial experiences (Physical/Mental Well-being), embraces the social responsibilities for all generations in Post Pandemic City or even with the isolation: 1. a human coop 2. book swap reading refuge 3. escape hidey-hole 4. WFH (work from here) 5. bicycles stopover 6. freshen up den 7. break out asylum 8. workout retreat 9. look-see deck 10. plant cultivation 11. [be] patient5 shelter 12. essential sanctuary 13. why so serious space 14. good old times place 15. venting booth 16. vending oasis 17. start-up zone 18. time machine 19. news haven 20. gossip area 21. memory lane 22. for crying out loud 23. UNI (You-name-It: a programme/activity of your choice)

For this project, I decided to use a free form to enhance the softness of the enveloping linen cloth. While thinking about the purpose for this architecture, I got inspired but the night sky outside my window. Thus, I decide to make a structure similar to a telescope (to look at the stars) and a tent (for a cozy environment outdoor). The idea of this architecture is not only to be temporary, but also able to be duplicated.

The tent is a 3.5m x 8m small size structure with an opening on the roof for users to gaze at the stars. The interior is decorated with warm light bulbs and soft cushions to enhance the cosiness of being in the tent. Furthermore, the translucent fabric covering will allow the warm lighting to make pedestrians passing by to be attracted and enter the tent.
